It’s Pointless… November 13, 2009

Exams are just around the corner. In fact, it’s only less than a week more. *haha* Am I worried? *ermmmmm* Sort of.The modules this semester, I shan’t deny, require much more effort man. We are already in our year 2, can’t possibly still give us simple stuffs right?

I’ve been working REAL (for real) hard from Saturday to Tuesday on Calculus II and I realised that I can actually do calculus. :) All I hope is that Prof. Lee don’t set killer questions and throw me off course… Although I got a gut feeling that he might actually do that. :/ Oh well…

I tried to study plants and animals diversity on Wednesday and Thursday. All I can said is – FAIL ATTEMPT. *haha* I end up watching 7 episodes of The Amazing Race 15 on Youtube. :D Anyway, is not that I don’t like Biology, in fact, I really really really love Biology! But just that, I really hate having Biology examinations because all it seems is like… they are testing your memorising skills.

I know some people may think I’m bullshitting – Biology is all about understanding. Well, I shan’t deny. Knowing how blood circulation works, that’s understanding. Knowing how breathing mechanism works, that’s understanding. But how on earth, is knowing all the different classes and order of animals and plants a matter of understanding?! For example, fishes are categorise into 5 main classes – Myxini (Hagfishes), Petromyzontida (Lampreys), Chrondrichthyes (Cartilaginous fishes – sharks, stingrays, etc. ), Actinopterygii (Ray-finned fishes) and Sarcopterygii (Lobe-finned fishes). All these words aren’t even derived from English words! How can you say it doesn’t involved memory skills?! Well, these are only the classes for fishes. We still to remember numerous classes of invertebrates and vertebrates as well!

I think that biodiversity paper should be an open book examinations. It’s really… insane to ask a person to memorise everything just to do well in examinations. It’s unlike other subjects like mathematics, chemistry or physics whereby it’s about applying the theories. Biodiversity has no theory – there’s only facts and facts are accessible everywhere! Let say you are a zoologist and one day you came upon an organism on your exploration. What usefulness does it have when you can classified the organism straightaway?! “Oh, that’s organism most probably belong to the class Holothuroidea (Sea cucumbers) because blah blah blah…” Well, the only thing you can achieved is most probably that your colleagues might be impress with you, or rather, think you are pretty much a geek (or someone with no life). Does it hurts if you return back to your laboratory and google it? What do you lose? Nothing. Well, you might lose precious time but hey, at least you save the number of years trying to memorise all these names right? So yup, it’s really pointless memorising all these names.

Regardless of what I’ve said, I still have to suck it up and take the examinations in a week time. *haha* That’s how reality works man. :/

Initially, my intention was just to blog about my revision updates but guess like, I end up ranting. *haha* Maybe that’s why I choose Biology as my AS2 because I only have the passion in understanding the knowledge and not memorising facts. To understand the knowledge, I can do it on my free-time – read textbooks, go online and search. I don’t need to sit for examinations to understand Biology.

Full throttle tomorrow! :)
